Alejandro Castellote


Alejandro Castellote (Madrid, 1959) is an independent curator, essayist and professor of photography. He directed the Photography Department at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid from 1985 to 1996, where he produced the FOCO Festival (1985 to 1989).

In addition to curating numerous solo exhibitions, he has been the artistic director of PHotoEspaña (1998 to 2000), and the curator of Mapas Abiertos, Fotografía Latinoamericana 1991-2002 and C on Cities, X Venice Architecture Biennale (2006). Guest curator of the Photoquai Biennial (2007 and 2009), Musée du Quai Branly, Paris. Curator of the Getxophoto Festival, Getxo, Bilbao (2007 to 2009); Seoul Photo Fair, South Korea (2010) and Singapore International Photography Festival (2012). Curator of the exhibition and companion book España a través de la fotografía. 1839-2010 (Fundación MAPFRE, 2013). He was director of the Daegu Photo Biennale 2014, South Korea, and co-curator of the International Photo&Video Biennale 2015, Chongqing, China. Guest curator of Image Triennial 2017, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China and at Imago Lisboa (2019).

In 2006 he was awarded the Premio Bartolomé Ros. From 2014 to 2016 he was the director of the Latin American Master’s Degree in Contemporary Photography at the Centro de la Imagen in Lima, Peru.
